Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais
Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) was a mechanical engineer who became interested in the movement patterns and muscular tensions we develop that limit the easy flow of movement we had before age, injury or disease interfered.
The pioneering mind/body work of Dr. Feldenkrais was originally designed to teach himself how to move without pain. Through attention and awareness he learned that in order to create new possibilities he needed to quiet his old patterns of action. Then, like a child, he needed to take the time to sense his actions as in an ‘aware action’ and then re-discover the process of finding an optimally organized way for moving with ease and efficiency. This returned him to a sense of wholeness in thought, attitude and action.
Dr. Feldenkrais, also an Israeli physicist and judo practitioner of Eastern European descent, first taught the method to 13 students in Israel . His Method is now taught throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and Japan. In the early 1970s, Feldenkrais taught at Esalen, California in the United States and gave professional trainings in San Francisco (1975-1977) and Amherst, Massachusetts (1980-1983).
The Feldenkrais Method reminds us that the best learning is self-discovery and that when we seem stuck and limited with our patterns, returning to our unlimited resources and reconnecting with our ability to learn, will be the most efficient way to learn new paths and function in an efficient and graceful manner.
